King Charles’s 2024 has been a tough one between battling cancer while continuing to be a working monarch and dealing with his estrangement from Prince Harry. However, Charles is actually as happy as he’s ever been, thanks to his ascension to the throne.
“He’s thoroughly enjoying being monarch. He’s obviously had a dreadful year, after that very bleak diagnosis he had, but things are definitely on an upward trajectory,” author Robert Hardman, who recently published an updated version of his King Charles biography, Charles III, New King. New Court. The Inside Story, told GB News.
Hardman added that Charles is “actually much happier [since becoming King]. One of his close friends said to me, there’s a new kind of serenity about him since he’s become king, because he no longer has to ask people if he can do things, he’s in charge.”

Part of Charles’s happiness comes from the amount of time he’s had to wait to become a reigning monarch. Hardman revealed that Charles was patient, and did his best to not undermine Queen Elizabeth while she was alive by letting his plans for his reign come to light.
“No one had waited to become monarch in history. To become king at 73, far older than any monarch ever was a long wait, but he was never itching to get his hands on the leaves of power,” the royal biographer explained. “He was incredibly conscientious about not briefing anything about his plans as king, because as soon as it would start leaking out because it would have looked like he was undermining the queen, but when the day came he was ready.”
