Royal fans concerned after Queen Mary spotted in Sydney without King Frederik

Hobart-born Queen Mary of Denmark surprised Sydneysiders this week after being spotted at Bronte Beach without King Frederik on the anniversary of their rumoured cheating scandal. Spanish publication Lecturas claimed last year that Frederik cheated on Mary with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova during a solo trip to Spain.

Mary was joined by her 13-year-old daughter, Princess Josephine, and friend Amber Petty, who was a bridesmaid at the royal wedding. The mother and daughter were seen taking in Sydney’s Bondi to Bronte walk and checking out the Sculptures by the Sea.

While Mary was in Sydney, Frederik was notably absent, as he was at home in Denmark, with the Danish royals sharing photos of him at the University of Copenhagen.

“Why’s he not in Australia with Mary and Josephine?” one concerned Instagram user asked.

“The king is looking so much more confident these days he is really embracing his new role,” another said, with a third replying, “Meanwhile, the Queen is back in Australia.”

Soon after the alleged affair news dropped, Queen Margrethe, Frederik’s mum, abdicated the throne, making him and Mary King and Queen. A Daily Mail royal commentator said at the time that Margrethe abdicated to ‘save’ her son’s marriage.

“The Queen always thought Mary was a fantastic asset to the royal family and if she thought she might leave it would have been a disaster,” royal author Phil Dampier said at the time. “She will now hope that Frederik and Mary patch up any differences and work together as the new King and Queen.”

Margrethe, however, said the abdication was more motivated by growing ill health after a complicated back surgery she had in 2022. She told the Danish public, “The surgery naturally gave rise to thinking about the future – whether the time had come to leave the responsibility to the next generation.”

“I have decided that now is the right time. On January 14, 2024, 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father, I will step down as Queen of Denmark.

“I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”

Frederik and Genoveva attended a Pablo Picasso exhibition together in Madrid, Lecturas claims they went into her apartment building separately, both emerging two hours later before getting into the same car.

The pair left in the same car, with the then Crown Prince flying home to Denmark the following morning.

Genoveva released a statement at the time of the reports that reads: “I categorically deny the statements that suggest a romantic relationship between Prince Frederick and me.

“Any statement of this type not only completely lacks the truth but also misrepresents the facts in a malicious manner.”

She added that her legal team was working to “protect my right to honour, truth and privacy”.

“This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take care of the pertinent steps to protect my right to honour, truth and privacy.”
