Princess Beatrice’s new baby will get unusual title – but not from King Charles
Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli are expecting a child in early Spring. The royal baby will inherit a title but not from their famous grandfather
There’s a baby on the way in the royal family as Princess Beatrice is expecting another child with her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.
The couple are parents to daughter Sienna, three, who will welcome her sibling in early Spring and Beatrice is also step-mum to Edoardo’s eight-year-old son Christopher, known as Wolfie. Sienna is cousin to August and Ernest, the sons of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, with the recent arrivals shaking up the line of succession.
And unlike her cousins, she has a title thanks to her 40-year-old father’s family. Sienna is a countess or “nobile donna” because Edoardo is an Italian count and her new sibling will follow suit and become a count or countess. Speaking to the Daily Mail before the pair wed on July 17, 2020, Edoardo’s dad, Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, explained: “Edoardo is the only male descendent taking the family into the next generation. He is a count, his wife will be a countess automatically and any of their children will be counts or nobile donna.”
Neither Beatrice nor Eugenie’s children are entitled to British royal titles as they are not grandchildren of the monarch – King Charles is their great-uncle. Last year, the children’s grandmother Fergie spoke out about her pride in her grandchildren in an episode of her podcast Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah.
She told how she enjoyed spending time with Sienna, with Fergie looking after the youngster while Beatrice was in Jordan for the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa last June. She explained: “I’ve managed to really have a bond with Sienna and guess what my bond is? I give her a little sip of my tea out of my tea cup …. I put some cold water with it.”
Meanwhile, Fergie also said she cried when Eugenie told her that her second son would be named after the duchess’s late father. Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank on May 30 last year, only revealing the news a week after his birth.
The middle name Ronnie is in tribute to Sarah’s late father Major Ronald Ferguson, who died in 2003. Sarah, speaking publicly about her new grandchild for the first time, described Ernest as a “seriously beautiful little boy” and said the gesture moved her to tears. She said of hearing of his name: “When Jack and Eugenie told me, it was so moving that they had put my dad in there. It was so kind, I thought. It made me cry.”
Fergie was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and Beatrice, 36, later opened up about her mother’s health condition in an interview on This Morning. “She’s been through so much but I think really now she’s sort of coming into her own,” she said.
