Prince Harry says royals thought Meghan Markle romance wouldn’t last due to ‘big problem’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle discussed the early days of their relationship and her first meetings with the Royal Family in their controversial Netflix series - and Harry claimed his relatives may not have warmed to his then-new girlfriend for one specific reason

They enjoyed a whirlwind romance after being set up by friends and have now been married for more than six years and are parents to two children.

But Prince Harry and Meghan Markle admit some had doubts about their relationship – with even some of Harry’s royal relatives wondering if their partnership would last. And the Duke of Sussex gave an explanation of why he believes some members of the Firm thought their union would be short-lived – and says one thing “clouded their judgement”.

The Sussexes made the claims in their controversial Netflix series, which saw them make a number of swipes about the likes of King Charles, Prince William and his wife Kate. In the second episode, the couple reminisce about Meghan being introduced to her new boyfriend’s family for the first time.

Harry says that his family seemed “incredibly impressed” upon meeting Meghan for the first time and were probably surprised a “ginger could land such a beautiful woman”. However, he accused the family of having their judgment clouded by Meghan being an ‘American actress’, with his wife adding that her then profession was “the biggest problem”.

He explains: “I remember my family first meeting her being incredibly impressed. Some of them didn’t quite know what to do with themselves (laughs). So I think they were. They were surprised. They were surprised that such a ginger could land such a beautiful woman. And such an intelligent woman.

“But the fact that I was dating an American actress, was probably what clouded their judgement more than anything else. Oh, she’s an American actress, this won’t last long. ”

While Meghan added: “The actress thing was the biggest problem, funnily enough. There is a big idea of what that looks like from the UK standpoint – Hollywood – and it’s just very easy for them to typecast that.”

Much has been made of the relationship between Harry and his father King Charles, especially in the aftermath of the Netflix series and the release of Harry’s controversial memoir Spare, where he railed against his family and revealed things about them in some of their most private moments.

Harry was last in the UK several weeks ago to attend the funeral of his late uncle Lord Robert Fellowes, the husband of Princess Diana’s sister Lady Jane Fellowes. On that occasion, he did not meet up with his dad.

Before that, Harry was in the UK in May for a 10th-anniversary service for the Invictus Games at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, with the King also in the capital on the same day. It had been hoped that father and son were on the road to begin repairing their rift, especially after they met when Harry dashed to the UK after it was announced that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer in February.
