Prince Charles took a campaigner who battled to save Geronimo the alpaca for a twirl on the dancefloor when he made a surprise appearance at a Jubilee tea party this week. Charles, along with TV star Jools Holland and soul singer Ruby Turner, surprised 250 guests by turning up at a party thrown by the Prince’s Foundation in the Orchard Room of Highgrove House in Tetbury.

And Charles took to the dance floor with Bridget Tibbs who was there with local Lindy Hop group, Cheltenham Swing Dance. To applause from the room they performed a tango to a rendition of Just Softly As A Morning Sunrise, performed by The Honeymoon Swing.

Ms Tibbs is an alpaca farmer who joined Chris Packham and Stanley Johnson in supporting Geronimo’s owner Helen Macdonald. She was fighting to save Geronimo from being killed after testing positive for TB. Ms Tibbs raised questions about the tests after one of her alpacas, Karlie, was put to sleep but later found to be clear of the disease.

She was heartbroken at the time but on Tuesday (May 31) she joined the Prince of Wales at the tea dance at his home in Gloucestershire to kickstart the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. She said afterwards: “He was delightful to talk to and we had a good chat. I was actually talking to him about environmental issues and saying the work that he does is amazing.”

Guests were unaware the prince would be joining them at the event, held as a way to combat loneliness and isolation within the community. Men and women from the local area enjoyed an afternoon tea of finger sandwiches, scones and a glass or two of Highgrove prosecco, while socialising and enjoying live music.
