Despite being the future King and Queen, Prince William and Princess Kate are parents first and foremost. They are widely reported to put being with the children above all their other priorities – doing the school run and often cooking family dinners themselves.

While they are two of the most senior members of the Royal Family, they still have to deal with some pretty relatable parenting struggles and stresses, which were summed up perfectly in an incredibly relatable moment that took place five years ago. Kate was spotted making a mad last-minute dash to her local Sainsbury’s in an effort to grab some Halloween costumes for her two oldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Whether it’s forgetting that World Book Day is, in fact, tomorrow, or realising there isn’t time to make the ambitious homemade costume for Halloween you planned on – many parents will have done something similar over the years. Spooky season is a highlight of the year for many children; from bobbing apples to carving pumpkins and, of course, a seemingly endless supply of sweets and chocolate, it’s easy to see why kids love to get into the spirit so much. But for parents trying to ensure their kids have the best possible time, it does mean a few more jobs are added to the regular to-do list.

Kate was spotted back in 2019 making the relatable dash to the supermarket, and she had Prince George and Princess Charlotte in tow. Fellow shopper Kathy Whittaker was frankly amazed to see Kate – accompanied by a bodyguard – doing such a normal activity.

“Another shopper said that Kate was in the shop near the clothing and pointed where she was to me. I just couldn’t believe it,” Kathy, a mum of four, said.

Kate was seen asking the kids what they wanted to dress up as in the Hardwick Industrial Estate branch in Norfolk before using the self-checkout tills to complete her purchases.

“She was with Charlotte and George looking at Halloween outfits but her bodyguard was kind of watching people with phones and telling them no pictures. I managed to get the photo as she was at the self-service checkout.

“You just don’t expect it to happen, you think Kate would shop in Waitrose or Harrods,” Kathy added.

This isn’t the first time Kate has been spotted in decidedly normal shops: in 2018 she was spotted having a look around The Range, a discount shop, in Kings Lynn, and in 2020 she was seen again in another branch of Sainsbury’s near her Norfolk home of Anmer Hall.

Kate has also famously donned a lot of clothing items from many high street stores in the UK, like Marks and Spencer, Whistles, Reiss, and Zara.
